Many old British parks and gardens are densely populated by evergreen species of Rhododendron; a result of garden fashion during the 19th and 20th centuries. Though these species have tended to be too large-leaved for bonsai; they still feature many characteristics of those species that are suitable for use as bonsai.
Originating from just one or two plants, this Rhododendron clump is now over 30 metres in diameter and up to 5 metres tall.
The interior is now entirely devoid of growth having been shaded from the sun for decades.
